My favorite cookies are always decorated with royal icing. I love how they look perfectly smooth and any sprinkles you decorate them with sink into the frosting.
Swoon.
I've always had a fear of trying to use royal icing because it's what most professional bakers use, so I suppose I thought it was too hard for me.
Today, I'm not sure why, perhaps I was feeling extra brave, I figured I would look at some tutorials online and try the process out for myself, which was surprisingly easy. I'm sure you could decorate your own perfect cookie! And this is coming from someone with little to no baking experience. If you follow a few steps and let your frosting dry at the appropriate times your cookies will look amazing!
> Sugar cookies
> 4 cups powdered sugar
> 5 tbsp water
> 2 tbsp meringue powder
*Frosting recipe originally found here.
After you mix your frosting ingedients it will be very thick, which is good. Add your food coloring and mix together. PLace a few tablespoons into a plastic sandwich bag and cut a small hole in the corner to pipe your frosting. Pipe the outline of your cookie design on all your cookies and let sit for around 30 minutes or until the icing is hard.
Then scoop a generous tablespoon of your frosting into a bowl and add 1tablespoon of water. This will make your icing smooth and thin enough to spoon into your outline.
Add a dollop of frosting and use a toothpick to pull the icing toward the edges. Add your sprinkles and let dry for around another 30 minutes or when the icing is hard.
Your done! Now your cookies will not only taste wonderful but look wonderful!

* I add a piece of sandwich bread when I store my cookies to keep them nice and soft...works like a charm.

Love this tutorial, i needed this, thanks for sharing and your cookies look awesome :)
Your cookies turned out beautiful! I'm kinda jealous :) My sister and I took a royal icing class and then we tried to replicate it for holiday cookies. It was such a big mess and they didn't turn out as pretty. Still yummy though!
Okay, I'm feeling so silly because I always add bread to our brown sugar to re-soften it; I can't believe I haven't thought of doing that with cookies -- GENIUS!
Thanks so much for becoming a Twitter follower, April!
